Weight, in my understanding, symbolizes the challenges, pains, and burdens we face throughout life. These weights grow heavier as we journey forward, but with each step, we too grow stronger. The path we take, with all its weight, shapes us into who we are. As the poet Saadi observed, "The burden of wisdom is heavy, but it is this weight that strengthens the shoulders of the soul." It is not merely the carrying that defines us, but the endurance, the resilience, and the wisdom we gain along the way.

Life often presents us with moments where we are daunted by the path ahead—1000 steps to reach a peak seem impossible. Yet, we are always capable of taking just one more step. As we take one step after another, we find that the journey of a thousand miles is made up of these single, often solitary steps.

In my reflections, I’ve understood that no one, not even those closest to us, can fully bear another’s weight. A mother cannot take on her child’s illness; the child must carry that burden themselves. Yet, in those rare moments where we can share in another’s burden, even for a short while, we touch something divine. These are golden opportunities, fleeting yet profound, where we can truly connect with another soul in their time of need.

Not all weights are chosen, and not all are welcome. But there is a certain wisdom in recognizing the right burdens to carry. Caring for a sick parent, for instance, may not be a joyful task, but it is a righteous one. There is honor in shouldering the responsibilities that align with our values, even when they are burdensome. I also believe that if we do not consciously choose our weights to carry, life will choose them for us. If we neglect our health, for example, the weight of disease may eventually be thrust upon us.

However, not all weights are worth carrying. As Rumi wisely advised, “Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.” This reminds us to release the unnecessary burdens that hinder our growth. Hatred, resentment, and grudges—these are the dead leaves that must be shed so we can continue to grow, to flourish, and to strengthen our souls.

The weights we carry, willingly or otherwise, shape who we are. Whatever your weight on your shoulder is and how heavy it may be, make sure to take moments to enjoy your journey. Hug a tree, walk under the rain, or smell a flower. These small joys remind us that life is not just about enduring the burdens but also about finding beauty along the way. The carries weight performance art project offers an opportunity to reflect on how we handle the weights of our life journey to shape us. I seek to explore these themes of weight, strength, and wisdom with others. I believe in the power of shared stories and reflections, and I am eager to contribute my own experiences and listen to yours.
